Dictated: The Deceiver

Dictated are a death metal collective comprised of York Keijzer ( vocals), Sonja Schuringa (guitars), Jessica Otten (guitars), Henri Sattler (session bass), and Michiel vd Plicht (session drums), and their new CD for Metal Blade Records is titled The Deceiver. While not reinventing the wheel by any stretch of the imagination, The Deceiver is actually well done brutal death metal, the two six-string ladies proving to be more than capable at delivering crushing, often times technical riffs that easily keep up with anything their male peers can crank out. Tunes like "No Absolution" and the aptly titled "The Basher" deliver punishing riffs and relentless blast beats (vd Plicht works overtime throughout this album), with York growling & screaming like a maniac throughout. It's also a really well produced, kick ass sounding record, with "Stonebreakers Rising" getting my vote for its 'pure death metal' sound, and other rippers like "No Mercy for Cowards" and the title track just crunchy & brutal like any fan of the genre expects. On that same token, at times there's a 'run of the mill', or 'been there, heard that' feel at times, Dictated not really trying to do anything unique here but still delivering solid extreme metal that sounds great and is brutal as hell. For that, two thumbs up.
