Bad DC: Ashes

Hailing from Nebraska, Bad DC offer up their debut full length Ashes in an effort to save Rock. That's a bold, if noble, intent and one which this hard working, enthusiastic bunch unfortunately fall well short of. Opener "Rock Forever" hints at a classic UK Metal wallop, the likes of Maiden and Priest the aim. However a mixture of a simply awful production (and that's taking into account that this is budget fare), lumpen riffs and a seriously limited range from frontman David Bykerk renders the effect impotent. And really that's the sorry story here, for no matter how much energy and vim Bad DC undoubtedly attack their music with, the end results simply sound like a home recorded demo of the likes that we all hide away in the hope that no one else will ever hear the efforts of our youth.

Harsh that may be, but picking out highlights on a release where the vocals seldom sound in tune (and the acappella moments simply painful), or where the drums drown out the guitars, is a serious challenge. Add in that the solos (burning though the one on the title track may be) have no sympathy for the songs they are meant to augment and that the rhythm section appears to have been introduced to each other that morning and there really is very little to shout about.

We all have to start somewhere, we just don't all have to release the results into the great wide world. Much more work is required for Bad DC to have any lasting impact other than bewilderment. Bad DC, or simply bad? It's not hard to decide…
