Kurnugia: Tribulations of the Abyss 7" EP
Ah, backmasking—the bane of watchdog groups of the 1980s. Remember? In those days, most albums with backmasking were immediately suspected of wicked intentions, usually connected to brainwashing, violent activity, or worse. As a kid, I really wanted to know what those awful messages were saying but never quite had the guts to spin a record backwards.
Well, Kurnugia may help me relive my childhood, at least in part. You see, this short release has two backwards sections, one at the beginning and one at the end. I have no idea what they are saying; more to the point, I don't think I even care. From a musical standpoint, backwards messages have a starkly uncanny quality. Is that really a voice I'm hearing? What am I supposed to do when faced with communications I do not or cannot understand?
Whatever their purpose on this release, the backmasked messages certainly bring back memories. I think that's the point—at least partly. The music here is dark and diabolic old school death metal, the kind that began to appear in the early 90s. So kick back, relax, and lend your ears to a simpler time: a time of burgeoning death metal, of fear, anxiety, and suspicion.
In short: If you are looking for eleven minutes of death metal played with underground fury, this is a good place to start.
