Ascended Dead: Arcane Malevolence 7" EP

Here's another short release from Blood Harvest Records. I should have just reviewed them all at once. They are so short that it actually takes me longer to review the album than it does to listen to it. Sometimes, I even get through them twice.

No matter. These short releases give me a pretty good impression of what's going in certain dark corners of the metal underground. My impression has so far been mostly positive. I think that fans of death metal, especially the kind that sounds a bit grittier than usual, will enjoy releases like this one.

The music here takes up only about fifteen minutes of your time. Like it or hate it, that doesn't amount to much. If there's a reason to listen to this one, it's mostly because of the occasional technical jams these guys bring out. This is down and dirty death metal, but it draws on some really impressive guitar work. The drums on this one are also pretty unforgettable. They just pound away, as if there were nothing else to live for but beat after beat after beat. Perhaps not surprisingly, I thought the vocals were too dirty and too distant.

Still, this is a fine release by a pretty killer band. Give this one a listen.
