Incarnated: Try Before Die

After eight years, fans of Incarnated finally have a new release to pick up. Will they like what they hear? Yes, I think so. Incarnated is not the kind of band to lose focus (or to grow soft) after several years. This album, like the band's earlier work, is relentless, heavy, and intense. Having said that, I'm not sure the band has grown much in their time away. Then again, this style of metal does not lend itself to depths of self-reflection. Instead, it howls and growls, always reminding us of the gore and decay that lies at the heart of the human.

The cover art sends a pretty strong message all by itself. I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at; the image on the cover reminds me of uncooked meat, but it could easily be something else. Whatever it is, it's clearly abject, something that's meant to convey a sense of the gore-inspired music found on the album.

For those unfamiliar with Incarnated, the music is pretty much what you'd expect. Lots of bands play up the seemingly obvious connections between death metal and gore. These guys do it as well as anyone. If I have one complaint about this album, it's this: the music runs together, giving the impression of one long track. I don't object to that on principle, but I do like a bit more variety in song structure, performance styles, and so on. This album is all about the relentless pounding of extreme music.
