Autumn Moonlight: The Sky Over Your Shoulders

There has been some fine progressive music coming out of South America the last few years and Autumn Moonlight continued the trend with their debut album The Sky Over Your Shoulders, released in 2010.

Quite simply, this is a stunning piece of art/post rock. If you have enjoyed the latter day output of Anathema you should really enjoy Autumn Moonlight.

The duo is Mariano Spadafora (bass, piano, virtual studio technology) and Tomás Barrionuevo (guitars, piano, virtual studio technology).

The album contains eight instrumental tracks with gradual builds and tasteful melodies. The songs are gorgeous, in a simplistic, minimalist way. As the songs take shape and the melodies firmly established you will be whisked away into Autumn Moonlight's realm of tuneful art rock. It is hard to pick favourites as every song is done so well but if I had to choose, the last two tracks would be at the top of the list. The title track gradually builds with textural keys and synths making for some lovely orchestral moments. The guitar almost takes on a shredding style before the orchestral elements provide a lush ending. "Autumn Moonlight Part II" is another stunner. The intro piano line is a little sad and matches nicely with the acoustic guitar. As the song builds muted electric guitar is pushed to the front of the soundscape, all soaring notes and tasty playing all around.

The songs do not vary greatly from one another and if you are expecting dramatic twists and turns Autumn Moonlight may not be the band for you. However, if mellow progressive music in the vein of bands like Anathema is to your liking, The Sky Over Your Shoulders will be quite a delectable treat.
