Sacrocurse: Unholier Master

Some of my friends have read Dante's Inferno and joke that they've been all the way to hell and back. I think I can see the point; Dante's journey is pretty fascinating, particularly all the ways he imagines a world of suffering souls.

This album has little to do with Dante, but it does have much to do with hell. The album art depicts a scene right out of popular iconography—powerful flames are burning, human beings are suffering, and Satan himself is observing the whole thing. The message is simple: Welcome to Hell.

The music on this album sticks with the devilish themes from beginning to end. I confess that I grew tired of it by the end. I've heard plenty of albums with hell-inspired ideas, some of them good, some of them just a little too burned over in the eternal flames. This album is a mixture of both. The bad news is that it just goes on for too long about the same themes, both musically and lyrically. By the time I listened to the album twice, I was ready to move on to other things. The good news, however, is that Sacrocurse plays old school black metal quite convincingly. I especially enjoyed "C.O.N.V.U.L.S.E," "End of Mankind Universe," and the title track. Some listeners may enjoy the rest of the album as well. I thought that, on the whole, it went on too long.
