Whilst I accept that Richard Pinhas is pretty special I am prepared to baulk at his promo people suggesting that his pairing with Oren Ambarchi is up there with Clapton and Allman. His people have a nice line in hyperbole to be fair, as evidenced by the following; "Nothing we've heard to date matches the partnership of Richard Pinhas and Oren Ambarchi for sheer synapse-adjusting sonic adventurism." A lovely turn of phrase to be sure and Tikkun is a pretty lovely album and is the companion piece to Welcome In The Void released at the same time on Cuneiform Records.
It has been released it as double-disc set featuring a CD of studio recordings and a live performance DVD. The studio album contains three lengthy musical tracks that meld the heavy, synth-driven, sequencer beats of classic Heldon (Pinhas' seminal early band) with the noisier aspects of Pinhas' work over the last decade. The DVD features a live performance of the duo filmed at Les Instants Chavires, Paris' main venue for experimental music, on October 29, 2013. The DVD was unavailable for review but the music is out of the top draw in its complexity aided by the drums of Joe Talia and the two guitarists almost psychically making beauty out of white noise, loops, synths and probably anything else to hand. I think I possible prefer Welcome In The Void but this is another winner from one of rock's unheralded creative forces.
