Blackwülf: Mind Traveler

I've listened to quite a few bands that use some combination that includes the word "wolf" (or "wülf") in their name. I think my favorite will always be Speedwolf, but who knows? Lots of these "wolf" bands are pretty great and Blackwulf is no exception. Fortunately, they also know exactly how to play the perfect blend of bluesy, doomy, heavy rock perfect for just about any occasion.

As I listened to this album, one thing kept going through my mind: this album is perfect for people who like to play air guitar while they listen to music. The guitars on the album move with just enough smoothness and rhythm that everything a listener could need—left hand, right hand, air guitar—work together beautifully. I mean, this is riff-based heavy rock built to last, the kind that fans immediately recognize for the rhythm, the groove, and the boogie. And these guys have all those things. Just listen to "Thunderwitch" or "The Prophet," or "Beastmasters" and you'll hear it, too. By the way, I'm sure I've heard "Beastmasters" before—is it a cover? No matter, it's a killer track, easily one of the best on the album.

Oh, and look at that cover art. The skills, the eyes, the uplifted hands, the funky symbols—this is stoner rock at its finest.
