New Jacobin Club: Soldiers of the Mark

I get the feeling that these guys put on a really good show and that fans who experience them in a live setting probably say great things about their time. This is my first exposure to the band. I've never seen them live, but I have looked at some pictures online. I'm not a huge fan of all the theatrical makeup (to me it's just so much camp), but these guys have been going strong enough for so long that they've developed a following, theatrics and all. I think I understand the makeup, the gothic-like costumes, and so on. It's fun, right? A chance for people to escape from mundane reality and imagine a different life with different possibilities. Still, I'll bet that much of this band's following comes from going to the shows and getting into the music in that setting.

I say all of this because, as an album, Soldiers of the Mark just isn't all that interesting. Sure, the music is played well enough and the songwriting is alright, but things are just too traditional and mellow for the way the band members actually present themselves. I know that there's a whole Misfits-like thing going on here, but it just wasn't enough for me to connect to the album as a whole. Interested listeners may want to check out "Seal of Metatron," probably the best track here.
