Megaton Leviathan is the project of Portland, Oregon multi-instrumentalist Andrew James Costa, and Past 21 Beyond the Arctic Cell is the sophomore release from this psychedelic/doom/space rock act. Complete with only 4 lengthy tracks, Past 21 Beyond the Arctic Cell is some serious mood music that doesn't always completely engage the listener, instead offering slow building menace that takes its time to fully make its impact. Costa weaves some heavy, ponderous riffs that are supported by spacey keyboards & electronics as well as meditative drums/percussion. When vocals do float into the mix, they are more of the haunting, ethereal, and melodic variety, almost like something you would hear on an old Pink Floyd or Eloy record from the 1970s. "The Foolish Man" sees these ominous vocal sections drifting over bubbling synths and droning sitar, while eerie chants waft in like tempting weed smoke over slow, funeral doom riffs on the crawling death march that is the near 13-minute "Arctic Cell". Not an album that you'll likely blast at your next summer barbecue party, Past 21 Beyond the Arctic Cell is perhaps a little meandering & bleak for its own good, but there's definitely some cool passages here that warrant a listen to any fan of psychedelic doom.
