Marillion: A Sunday Night Above The Rain

"Can you just do a quick review of the new Marillion live album?" asked our esteemed leader. Yes I can – it's very good. Next! That said, in many ways Marillion are a fairly unreviewable band being one of the earliest embracers of the potential of the internet they have connected with their fans in a way many bands have never really managed so I could say that this album is utter rubbish (it isn't) and it wouldn't matter one jot – apart from the hate mail which would clog up my inbox.

If push comes to shove I still prefer the Fish era to the Steve Hogarth era but this is a lovely warm recording of a set delivered at March 10, 2013 at the band's bi-annual Marillion Weekend at Center Parcs in Port Zelande, the Netherlands. Sounds That Can't Be Made was an album which left me a little cold but here the tracks make much more sense and benefit from the live passion Hogarth projects, "Montréal" especially shimmers in the live arena as does "Invisible Ink", "a song about breaking and entering." A rousing version of "Garden Party" rounds things off on a real high and I can see this making my year end list.
