Meanies, The: Cover Their Tracks

This is a first for this reviewer; writing a review of a cover band. That is the position I find myself listening to The Meanies' Cover Your Tracks. The players' musical roots date back to the '70s bands Stackridge, The Korgis and Graduate originating from Bath, England. What sets this set apart from the usual pop fare, you will find no prog here, are the stellar vocal harmonies. The first two tracks, The Foundations' 1967 hit "Baby Now That I've Found You" and The Four Seasons' "Who Loves You" from 1975 illustrate the point. The vocals in this band are superb. Other highlights include the soulful pop balladry of Carrack's "How Long", the crystal clear vocal harmonies in The Doobie Brothers' "Listen to the Music" and a glossy silk version of Steely Dan's "Reelin In The Years". The guitar has a little less bite here but is still well played. "Dreams" is another track that showcases the band's delicious vocal harmonies.

Of course, to really enjoy this set you have to have an affinity for pop music. Now the question must be asked, if you have the original versions do you really need this album? Probably not, but one must give credit to the band for adding such finesse to these classic tracks. This record won't change the world but it sure is a nice slice of nostalgia and I quite enjoyed the trip.
