They say the British prefer their steak bloody, almost most of them still eat it raw."
Well ok then...that indeed brings us to the new full-length release from UK stoner outfit Steak, titled Slab City. The band name & album title pretty much sum up what these guys are all about, which is no nonsense, no frills, groove laden heavy rock in the vein of Fu Manchu, Danzig, Monster Magnet, and Kyuss. Fuzzy riffs and beer soaked vocals dart in and out through pounding rhythms on crushers like "Liquid Gold", "Pisser", "Coma", and the rumbling "Roadhead". Gotta love the abundance of really fat, heavy bass throughout the album, and coupled with the fuzz soaked guitar riffs it makes for a lethal combination, especially on the upbeat "Hanoid" or the brief yet lumbering title track. For a lengthy slab of psychedelic stoner metal, look no further than the Monster Magnet/Hawkwind influenced mayhem that is "Rising", and "Old Timer D.W." is as close to swampy Southern Rock as a band of this nature is going to get.
By no means groundbreaking or elite level stuff, Slab City is nevertheless a hell of a lot of fun. Bring an ice cold six pack and be prepared to party.
