Trigger: Machina

There are countless bands out there who bring aspects of Iron Maiden and crash them headlong into Metallica via Machine Head. However there are fewer twisting in a tang of Bullet For My Valentine and even fewer doing so with the verve, power and precision of Australia's Trigger. Add in that Machina is their debut EP (five songs and an intro) and that they've, with the help of Chris Themelco at Monolith Studios, created something with quite an immense depth of sound and force and really, this is impressive stuff.

"Ashes" opens, a forty five second float of clean guitars and synths, before "Burnt" sets the Trigger stall out in uncompromising fashion. Twin guitars patiently blaze, cymbals crash and then.... the main event begins, a killer riff, scything lead breaks, drums agallop, bass booming and utterly convincing half sung, half spat vocals from Tim Leopold. A host of band and song influences flash past, yet it doesn't matter, for this and the slightly more modern in the guitar department, "My Darkness" are simply of a level that you are impressed no matter the origin of the ideas. That the standard remains this high through the full on "Ascension", cleverly pace changing (although the killer riff in the breakdown is a beaut) "End Of Life" and more traditional title track, really is beyond initial expectations.

The tests for Trigger are now twofold. Can they get themselves on stage with bands around the world big enough to introduce their music to potential followers and can they reproduce this exciting level of fare across a whole album? On this evidence, expect big things.

Go on, pull the trigger for Machina, this band deserves it!
