Quantum Fantay: Terragaia
Quantum Fantay is a Belgian space rock band influenced by the US band Ozric Tentacles. The players include Gino Bartolini (drums), Dario Frodo (guitars), Pete Mush (synths) and Jaro (bass). They are joined by many guest musicians adding instruments like bagpipes, flute, harp and tablas.
What is really cool about this music is how they incorporate different sounds from around the world. Celtic, Middle Eastern, African and Caribbean can be heard all molded into the band's space rock roots.
The opening track "Journey To Earth" has an ethnic feel (as do many of these tracks) with pounding synth lines and Eastern flavoured guitar work. The synths give off a definite Ozric vibe. "Azu kéné déké lepé" is another ethnic sounding tune, this time taking us to Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. Tribal drums and heavy guitar riffs lead to some cool sampled Caribbean sounds. "Desert Rush" features percolating drums and synths with a more Middle Eastern tinge while "Aargh" takes us to Europe with a decided Celtic feel. Flute, synths and bagpipes take turns at leading the melody which just might worm its way into your brain and stay a while. The band even touch on their version of country and western with "Cowdians". Don't be frightened as this is much more than a country song. The rest of the songs are equally as absorbing revealing their charms with each successive listen.
Quantum Fantay have certainly scored high marks for Terragaia and are another one of this year's pleasant surprises. I very much look forward to hearing more of their music and I urge anyone vested in the spacier side of prog to check it out as soon as possible.
