Falconer: Black Moon Rising

Thirteen years after releasing their self-titled debut Falconer have recorded album number eight Black Moon Rising. Prior to this release my familiarity with the Swedish power metal band was limited to an album that many claim to be one of their best Northwind.

Unlike the last Falconer album from 2011 Armod which was apparently solely sung in Swedish, and while this may not have been to everyone's liking Falconer is now back to English on Black Moon Rising . There is so so much energy and fantastic music on this new album and unlike my experience with Northwind where it took a while to warm to the style of their vocalist Mathias Blad. Actually the track I like the most from Northwind is "Ridom, Ridom" off the bonus disc which he sings in Swedish. This time I had no such problems with Black Moon Rising as this Falconer album has so much going for it, and the musicianship is so good. Their folk side hasn't been lost and is incorporated most effectively, and there is some heavy material on this album like "Locust Swarm" which is so ballistic in one part I had to check I had the right CD on. "Wasteland" is another favourite that features exhilarating drumming and some truly addictive riffs. "Ages Of Runes" is a wonderful song full of engaging music showing Falconer know how to write a great head banger.

Fans of the band who are eager to hear a heavier Falconer at full flight will love Black Moon Rising.
