It's been quite some time since we've seen veteran death metal act Massacre, but after two decades they have returned with a solid slab of old school extreme music titled Back From Beyond. Comprised of former Death alumni Rick Rozz (guitar) and Terry Butler (bass), along with Ed Webb (vocals), and Mike Mazzonetto (drums), Massacre deliver death metal the old Florida way, with no gimmicks or trimming, just straight ahead brutality. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to tell if this thing was recorded in 1992 or 2014 if you went into it blindly, as tunes like "Ascension of the Deceased", "Hunter's Blood", and "The Evil Within" seem straight out of a time capsule back to when Death, Obituary, and Morbid Angel were bursting out of the Florida swamps. Most of the songs are brief and to the point, with crushing riffs, maniacal guitar solos, pounding rhythms, and Webb's guttural growls, screams, and bellows. It's all solid as hell, and while you might say that there's nothing new or original happening here (which is certainly true), it doesn't make Back From Beyond any less enjoyable for old school death metal fans. Welcome back guys!
