WAMI (White Appice Mendoza Iggy): Kill the King

Kill the King is the new album from the project known as WAMI, which is short for Doogie White (Michael Schenker Group/Rainbow/Yngwie Malmsteen/Tank), Vinne Appice (Black Sabbath, Dio, Heaven & Hell), Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake), and 16 year old Polish guitar hero Iggy Gwadera (Anti Tank Nun). The story goes that Anti Tank Nun was the opening act on a bill with Thin Lizzy a few years ago, and Mendoza suggested that he and Gwadera record some music together. With the stars aligning, Appice & White also got involved, and WAMI was born. Fans can expect a very early '80s sounding melodic hard rock album, complete with Iggy's big riffs, blazing solos, soaring vocals from the always dependable White, and the rock solid rhythm section of Appice & Mendoza. For a youngster, Gwadera has quite the boatload of skills, laying down some classic styled riff-o-rama on cuts like "The Rider", "One More For Rock 'n' Roll", "The Resistance", and the Dio inspired "Heart of Steel". Even the chugging, more upbeat tracks work, in a sort of Sabbath-meets-Van Halen way, especially "Get Out of My Way" and "Transition". I was almost expecting a cover of the Rainbow classic "Kill the King" to be included here, seeing as the band named the album after it, but no such luck. Doesn't really need it to be honest, as this is just an all around solid hard rock affair from a couple of seasoned veterans and a young gun who no doubt the world will be well aware of after hearing this cool album.
