Brother Firetribe: Diamond In The Firepit

The arrival of Diamond In The Firepit proves the fears of those who had begun to think that the five year absence of Brother Firetribe was actually a permanent departure; this third outing from the side project of Nightwish guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and Leverage singer Pekka Heino Ansio still proudly extolling the virtues of Melodic Rock and AOR glories of days gone by. Does it move the band on from where their two earlier releases found them? Well, truth be told, why would it? It's not as though the lovers of the genre in which BF operate are looking for boundaries to be smashed to smithereens, or for challenging 86 part concept pieces. Instead Diamond In The Firepit stays true to the ethos and ideals Brother Firetribe have held true since their inception. Sumptuous melodies, layered vocals, stinging guitars and surging synthesizers pushing and shoving from the off. Thankfully they simply don't let up until this album is through with imploring you to clap your hands to the beat, belt out the choruses for all your worth and air guitar like a loon.

Some may tell you it's a simple formula and they'd be right, they may also try to convince you that they've heard it all before and even by this very band and again, arguing would be a futile gesture, "Hanging By A Thread" Giuffria like in its pouting strut, "Far Away From Love" adding a Scandie sheen and gleam, "Winner Takes It All" (a Giorgio Moroder written Sammy Hagar cover) giving a strong indication that the protagonists in BF aren't just going through the motions. However why should Brother Firetribe sway from their course to satisfy the naysayers? The answer is simple, they shouldn't. It may result in DITF sounding uncannily similar to their other albums and, indeed, to numerous other acts from across the years but in many ways that's exactly the point here. Brother Firetribe are playing this style because, pure and simple, they want to.

Will Diamond In The Firepit change the world? No, but it didn't set out to. Will it entertain and put smiles on the band's faithful following when they hear the songs live at this year's Firefest? It sure will and ultimately that was the goal – job done.
