The Sours is a New York based trio formed by Sara Schrift (vocals, guitar) and accompanied by Sasha Markovic (guitars) and Kana Kamitsubo (piano on tracks three and ten). The band plays acoustic music that is quite poignant and melancholic made very easy to listen to by Schrift's melodic and often poignant voice and Markovic's enchanting acoustic guitar. The music never strays too far off the beaten path , staying clearly on the folky side of things and is heavily influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell and British folk musician Nick Drake.
The album begins with "everwas", a gently sweeping number featuring lovely acoustic guitar and Schrift's softly sung vocals. The tone is somber, as it is through much of the album, and the melody is memorable. "second stop" is another melancholic tune with another pretty melody while "gnt" is slightly breezier and recalls Joni Mitchell. The gently struck piano notes match perfectly with Schrift's clear organic vocals. The last track "egret" is an a capella ditty with a slight Maritime feel.
The Sours have made a promising debut album filled with wistful melodies and poignant vocals. This is a mellow album best enjoyed well into the evening, preferably with that special someone by your side.
