Kadotetut, the latest release from Finnish death metal trio Vainaja, apparently tells the story of 19th century rural Finland, with evil cults battling parishioners of ancient religions, resulting in murder, sacrifice, conspiracy, and, well, just a lot of really ugly stuff. With the tale told using monstrous growls in Finnish, don't expect to understand a thing of what's going on, but the crushing, death metal music steeped in doom does a good job to paint a truly horrific time in the history of Finland. "Valon Lapset" is a pretty impressive slice of extreme metal with an epic feel, and the massive riffs of "Verinen Lahde" will instantly appeal to both death metal & doom fans. Overall this is a cool platter of old school styled doomy death metal, and another quality release from the Svart Records camp.
