Texas act Destroyer of Light formed in 2012, when musicians Steve Colca (guitars/vocals), Keegan Kjeldsen (lead guitar), Jeff Klein (bass), and Kelly "Penny" Turner (drums) came together to create a band that let them fulfill their love for classic doom/stoner/sludge groups such as Black Sabbath, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Crowbar, Eyehategod, The Melvins, and Saint Vitus. Their second EP, Bizarre Tales Vol. 2 clearly delivers what they have set out to do, and that is to put together songs steeped in heavy riffs, psychedelic vocals, and plodding rhythms. Tunes like "Lost Time" and "Battlefield" are enjoyable enough, with lots of fuzz, feedback, and reverb, while the near 10-minute "Year of the Witch" takes spooky sludge to a new level, with haunting, effects laden vocals that could have come off an old Hawkwind album drifting through slow, ponderous guitar & bass riffs dripping with distortion. "Obliterated By Cosmic Fire" even mixes in some bluesy/psych styled lead guitar solos in betweent the riff-o-rama. Overall this is a pretty enjoyable EP with some cool riffs, and while I'm not sure that what is on display here is going to set the world on fire, I don't think it needs to. Good job, and I'll be interested to see what the band has in store for us next time around.
