English Dogs: The Thing With Two Heads

It's cool when bands like English Dogs realize that people still want to hear from them. Far too many interesting and influential bands get lost in the past without much discussion, only longing memories. With this album, the boys deliver their first recorded material in over two decades. Some readers may have caught the band on their short tour back in 2012. This album grew out of that tour. The band is obviously having lots of fun here; I doubt this will be the last we hear of English Dogs.

The music here is basically a 42-minute tribute to punk metal. At times, the band develops a pirate theme. I was less impressed with those tracks, mostly because I just don't see the appeal of such things. The rest of the album, however, is pretty good. For me, the highlights included "Gorgonized," "Hate Song," "Planet of the Living Dead," and "The Thing Will Arise." "Planet of the Living Dead" is also pretty good, if a little too jolly. Most listeners will especially love the angry and vulgar ranting of "Hate Song." For better or worse, it captures exactly the kinds of things everyone wishes they could say at one point or another. Besides that, it's catchy enough that it could even become a sing-along classic. Let's hope these guys hit the road in support of this one.
