Eths: Ex Umbra In Solem

It's been a couple of years since Eths released their last album. With this new one, they offer a limited-edition EP, (only 1,000 copies will be published) mostly as a way of introducing fans to new singer Rachel Aspe. I've listened to the EP a couple of times now and I like it well enough. Aside from one new track (the title track), the EP is drawn entirely from back-catalogue material, including three tracks from III with vocals recorded by Aspe. In my mind, this EP was a good idea. Some fans won't like the idea of anything being re-recorded, but Aspe has a good voice. She alternates the harsh growls with lighter melodic passages effectively and seems to have a lot of confidence in what she's doing. I preferred the studio tracks over the live ones, even though I thought the guitars were deeper and darker on the live tracks.

For those who don't know, Aspe is famous for her appearance on a French television show—a talent series that's basically France's version of "America's Got Talent." There are YouTube clips of her performance that generated well over one million hits. I didn't take the time to watch them, but they are easy to find if you are curious to see them. She has a good voice; let's hope that Eths will be a good match for her. They are a pretty good band, but they have a lot of turnover.

For now, their future seems promising. Fans will have to wait a little longer for a full-length, but this should hold them over for a while.
