Metsatöll: Karjajuht

Just so you know, the name "Metsatöll" is an ancient Estonian euphemism for wolf and in 14 years, over 500 performances and 70,000 records sold since their formation in 1999 we know have Karjajuht for our delectation. I had the pleasure of catching Metsatöll in the UK last year when the played with the mighty Korpiklaani and I very much enjoyed their set and I have positive feelings towards Karjajuht.

Produced by the band and Samuel Ruotsalainen, Karjajuht is definitely of the folk metal persuasion but clearly eschews many of the genre's proclivities towards tweeness and what many would consider downright stupidity or overly frivolous. The band incorporate their metallic tendencies alongside their native Estonian folk instrumentation and despite my previous sentence have come up with an album that is both authentic yet pleasurable. Karjajuht means pack leader and this album may be the one which pushes them ever closer to headliner status.
