Diaries Of A Hero: Diaries Of A Hero

Modern metal quartet Diaries Of A Hero return with album number two that feels like a fresh start for the band after the pop punk overtures of 2010's debut. Since then the band have toured with Motorhead and Anthrax and perhaps Lemmy had a word in their collective ears as to their future direction. This time around DOAH seem to have gone down the path of the likes of TesseracT and Between The Buried And Me to name two of the more obvious reference points but have also injected their sound with enough originality and vitality that should stand them in good stead. Leadoff single 'Solitude' has a pummelling hypnotic groove and is spiced up by some extended soloing courtesy of lead guitarist Jonathan Weeks and the intensity is carried through into the blistering 'Manimal' and jackhammer rhythmic assault of 'J5'.

Technically DOAH seem to have stretched themselves much further this time around, best exemplifies by some tightly delivered instrumental passages. That is not to say they have lost any of their commercial appeal and it is is easy to see why Kerrang have been quick to heap praise on the band and particularly vocalist Carlo Del Favero who is impressive throughout but none more so than on the disturbing 'High School Funeral' and angst driven 'Scarwhores'. Overall then, a very strong sophomore album packed with melodic aggression and well-crafted song structures that should see DOAH firmly establish themselves on the alt-metal scene.
