Tummler and Solomon: You've Worm Out Your Welcome

Hailed as the heaviest, loudest doom band from Tacoma, Washington, the four-piece known as Tummler and Solomon (no idea what the name means) are unleashing their brand new CD, titled You've Worn Out Your Welcome. At times, you might feel that the band have indeed 'worn out their welcome' as you make your way through this album. Don't get me wrong, there are indeed some heavy, crushing riffs to be found here, though some come more from the stoner/sludge side of things than your standard doom influence, and the addition of the occasional creepy organ passage is a nice touch. However, the vocals of guitarist Paul Lyon are just flat out annoying; he sounds like he was trapped in a tunnel or mine pit when they recorded this thing, way off in the distance while he either just talks or gives a faint whiney yell. You can't make out a thing he is saying, and it just doesn't fit some of the really powerful grooves & riffs of songs like "The Politics of Dying", "Climbing up the Curtain", and the title track. It's a real shame, as a tune such as "People Who Own Horses" contains one hell of a powerhouse riff, but man, those vocals just ruin the song. My advice to Tummler and Solomon-get a real singer and realize your potential.
