Robinson, Rich: The Ceaseless Sight

I remember well the first time I physically saw Rich Robinson. It was with the Black Crowes at King Georges Hall in Blackburn circa 1990 and I seem to remember being bitterly disappointed in the whole shebang. The band had made their name playing rollicking, concise southern rock-inflected tunes yet that night they decided that they wanted to be the Allman Brothers Band – not a problem, I utterly love the Allmans, unfortunately, they did it with all the subtlety of Metallica – definite problem!

I'm pleased to report that in the intervening near quarter of a century that Robinson (much like his brother) has really found his voice as both a songwriter and guitarist. No longer does he feel the need to rock out like a mother on every track. No siree, less is definitely more these days and the experience is so much more satisfying. If you hanker for the days when the Stones and possibly the aforementioned Allmans made quality records then The Ceaseless Light will be right up your street, "Obscure The Day" even sounds vaguely like Led Zeppelin. It's not an album which I have dipped in and out of since I've had it, rather I've played it from beginning to end every time and that, I'd argue is how it should be seen, as one cohesive piece as it flows like an old fashioned LP giving each song space to exist before flowing beautifully into the next, taking the listener on a relaxed, poetic journey.
