Tyla Gang: Live In Stockholm

If ever there was a good time party album, then this is it. No frills, no airs, no graces, just Rock that Rolls and Punk that cajoles. That's Live In Stockholm from Tyla Gang, a band which way back in 1972 formed from the ashes of Ducks Deluxe. Seven short years later and Tyla Gang were gone and until 2010 forgotten by the band themselves, when vocalist/guitarist Sean Tyla teamed up with bassist John McCoy (Gillan), guitarist Bruce Irvine, drummer Michael Desmarais and additional live keyboard/guitar player Max Lorentz. If this live album is anything to go by, it is a mighty reunion, what with it finding a band on top form romping through a selection of top notch, attitude packed Rock, Blues and attitude to great effect. "Cannons Of The Boogie Night" explodes through slide guitar and grooves big enough to swing a hoard of gorillas from, before "The Young Lords" takes the Quo blueprint and slows it to a real insistent boogiethon.

It's a great start, but from there things are simply ramped up from song to song, "Lost Angels" swaggering dangerously (and from where it's easy to hear where the likes of Hanoi Rocks got some of their ideas from), "Willin'" cool enough to sit in the slow and easy lane, before the crackle and pop of "Styrofoam" grabs the Blues by the scruff of the neck, ties it to the back of the pick-up and drives it a full pelt down a dusty, rock strewn path. As if that wasn't enough, "Suicide Jockey" adds a thunderous thump to the Knopfler after a punch up vocals of Tyla and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre Boogie" closes the show by 100% living up to its name.

Live albums aren't always the best introduction to a band, but if like me, you haven't encountered Tyla Gang before, prepare yourself for a party of leg juddering, knee buckling, ear rejoicing proportions and really, what more could you need?

Tyla Gang: Live In Stockholm

My Score:

Tyla Gang's English roots date all the way back to 1972 and the band Ducks Deluxe. That band broke up in 1975 and Tyla Gang was born but only lasted four years. In 2010 the band reformed with original members including Sean Tyla (lead vocals, guitar), Bruce Irvine (lead and slide guitar), Michael Desmarais (drums, vocals) and John McCoy (bass, vocals).

The album was recorded in 2013 and the pub atmosphere comes through loud and clear. Production wise it is far from perfect but that sort of adds to the charm. The crowd is clearly having a good time and Tyla Gang put on a good performance here. The band start with "Cannons Of The Boogie Night", a fiery rocker with a good melody and thick slicing guitar riffs. The catchy "The Young Lords" is another good track featuring nice Hammond from guest musician Max Lorentz while "Lost Angels" continues the band's penchant for gritty hard rock with a flair for addictive melodies. The songs continue in a similar vein although they do add a couple of slower numbers like "Willin", a country influenced heartfelt ballad with splashes of Hammond in the background. My favourite track is the scorching "Suicide Jockey" with its scintillating Hammond and ripping guitar work.

Live In Stockholm is a solid live album from a group of veteran musicians who have been around the block a time or two. It is a gritty, honest performance that any fan of plain old rock and roll will be sure to enjoy.
