Comback Kid: Die Knowing

It's pretty easy to mess up hardcore punk. Think about it: lots of bands play with the structures, their simplicity and rage, and exploit them for teenaged audiences, leaving behind the things that made punk exciting in the first place. Sure, market forces were probably always at work, but punk rock should keep trying to stay outside of their power. There are too many bands that sell anger and aggression as a means of branding themselves but do very little musically. Some bands are obvious about this process, others aren't.

Comeback Kid sticks pretty close to their hardcore side, creating short songs that burst with plenty of energy. I was especially interested in "Losing Sleep" and "Wasted Arrows," two tracks that capture this band's strengths pretty well. At times, Comeback Kid indulges too much in sing-along mode. Any genre can legitimately come up with a catchy chorus, one that audiences will sing as they jump, shove, and mosh. But still, this band this band sometimes stays there too long. It worked well enough with "Should Know Better," but not as much with "Sink In."

These guys are label mates with the much-maligned band Emmure. For those looking for something better from Victory Records, this is a good choice.
