Bloody Hammers: Under Satan's Sun

This band's promo materials suggest that this is an album filled with "charm." Normally, I would bristle at such a term being applied to heavy music, but it's the right word. This is indeed a charming and delightful musical offering, one that delivers on its promise of big grooves played with 70s flair.

The band's name, Bloody Hammers, must refer to something more than the tool we've all used to smash our respective thumbs. Given this band's overall aesthetic, it would make sense that "Hammers" also refers to the gloriously gothic and stylized films coming out of Hammer studios, the company known for producing horror films for well over thirty years. Just look at the album cover here—it's designed like the old movie posters from the glory days of Hammer films. These films, for those who don't know, often starred Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and so many others. I won't go on; if any readers haven't seen the classic Hammer films, take the time to discover them.

Back to the music: this is a riff-heavy, groovy, album that luxuriates in the warmth of glorious distortion. I was captivated by the music immediately and think that other listeners will enjoy it as well. The lyrics are playful and interesting, drawn—like the Hammer films themselves—from occult themes. At times, they even touch on the horrors imagined by writers such as Ray Bradbury and H. P. Lovecraft. Check this one out!
