Words Of Farewell: The Black Wild Yonder

We live in a world where we like to classify all media products into snug compartments to make it easier for potential audience members to work out whether or not to check out the latest offerings in the hurly-burly of the 24/7 multi-channel digital age in which we live. Therefore, despite what the band and their people may say, such as, "their sound is much more atmospheric, varied and emotional to fit this alcove," Words of Farewell play melodic death metal and do it very well.

There are some really excellent songs on The Black Wild Yonder such as the tuneful "Telltale Nation" with its sumptuous and extravagant use of keyboards. Lyrically the album isn't exactly and escapist bowl o'fun as can be grasped from the opening of "Beauty in Passing";

A mere fallacy leads to despite
Obliteration of matters and feelings
A blurred border you do not dare cross
A forgotten sanctuary you cannot claim
The smoke of neglect slowly disperses
Emitting submission to the society

Yes, at times one can see the influence of Dark Tranquillity in the more progressive passages and perhaps the production is too sleek but this is a fine album from a band whose star is very much in the ascendency.
