Terminal Death: Terminal Death

Here we have a collection of demo & rehearsal material of the '80s underground death metal act from Chicago known as Terminal Death. Thanks to the folks at Shadow Kingdom Records, these rare recordings can now be enjoyed by a whole new generation of extreme metal fans, as well as the few who actually knew about the band back in 1985. This is all pretty raw stuff and indicative of the early thrash/death metal sound, not too far removed from early Slayer, Sepultura, Hellhammer, Possessed, and Death. Most of the songs are short and to the point, filled with furious, jagged guitar riffs, howling vocal growls, frenzied guitar solos, and noisy drum blasting, the production quality obviously of rehearsal & demo quality, because, well, that's what these are. Despite some great energy, and the fact that this early form of extreme metal is so endearing, the band seems to be lacking a bit in the songwriting department, as there's just no variety here, with many of the songs sounding very similar to each other. That being said, "Celestial Execution", "Hacksaw", "Judge Death", "Brain Tumor", and "Chained to the Abyss" are brutal examples of early death metal, and show that this band certainly was on to something. The sizzling instrumental title track might actually be the coolest track of them all, as the band rip into some trashy Show No Mercy era Slayer styled arrangements. Sadly, this is all that we have from these guys, so savor what we have here, and if you are a vinyl nut, Shadow Kingdom is working with Hells Headbangers Records on an LP release of this as well.
