Polska Radio One: Cosmos Inside

First things first. Polska Radio One are not from Poland. The band is from the Russian border city of Yekaterinburg. The band was discovered by Trail Records, an up and coming label fronted by Alexander Tsalikhin and Vlad Milyavsky.

In the band are Dmitry Kutnyakov (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Alexander Naumov (electric tampura), Andrei Golubev (keyboards, bass), Feodor Sanatin (drums, keyboards) and Stepan Jee (sitar).

The album comes in digipack format with pictures of the band on the inside cover. Man, these guys are young but they play well beyond their years. Cosmos Inside is a great name for the album because the music contained within is pure retro psychedelic rock, in the vein of early Floyd, laced with spaced out moments that will have fans of the genre hitting the repeat button. The first track "The Final Mantra" starts with chant-like vocals and a huge drum sound. The music builds into a psychedelic romp with a transplanted '60s style guitar hook that is simply irresistible. "The Fractalized Sky", great name by the way, has more psychedelic embellishments that you can shake a stick at, including spacey synth textures and trippy vocals. It's Floyd inspired psychedelia with a nod to The Beatles. "Time Eternity" brings back memories of the Lennon penned "Tomorrow Never Knows" with the sitar adding another layer to the already dense sound. The Eastern theme is undeniable. In the catchy "Morosim (2 C-P Dub)" the music alternates between a repeating guitar loop and cool spacey effects while "To The Delta Of Aquarius" is replete with organ right out of the '70s. It's another psychedelic spacey jam that just feels right. The title track is also the longest; an instrumental with snaking synth lines, an addictive repeating bass line and wonderful guitar effects. Psychedelic/space rock at its finest.

I should also point out the vocals are quite distorted throughout the album. I think it works really well in the context of the songs but check out the samples to hear for yourself.

Polska Radio One have put out one of the better psychedelic albums I have heard recently. Definitely a band on the rise!
