Former World super bike champion James Toseland officially retired from the sport a couple of years back after a wrist injury and now returns to his first love – rock music. Aside from Toseland the band is made up of Zurab Melua on guitar, Rabea Massaad on guitar, Dave Hollingworth on bass and Ben Minal on drums but the magic ingredient here is the inclusion of the much in demand Toby Jepson as co-songwriter and producer. A collection of largely up-tempo hard hitting blues rockers with a couple of smooth ballads thrown in for good measure, Renegade is a consistently strong album to launch the next phase of Toseland's career.
Bold and ballsy hooks ring loud and clear throughout and the album gets off to a powerful start woth the groove laden 'Life is Beautiful'. 'Singer in a Band' seems to be autobiographical in part and you get the feeling that Toseland really reveling in the opportunity to live the dream now his sporting achievements are in the past. 'Just no Way' offers a top-drawer soft rocker with another huge chorus and Toseland proves to be equally adept at singing a power-ballad.
It remains to be seen if the hard rock community will be accepting of Toseland in much the same way as it has been with Chris Jericho and Fozzy but on the evidence so far a warm welcome is much deserved.
