Blackwater: Blackwater
Cool name for this 5-piece doom metal band from Illinois, and their new self-titled CD on The Path Less Traveled Records is produced by none other than Eric Wagner, who of course worked with legendary genre act Trouble. It's no surprise then that Blackwater has a certain similarity to the mighty Trouble, as well as vintage Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Candlemass, as well as more modern acts such as Pallbearer and Black Label Society. Plenty of slow, heavy guitar riffs permeating tracks such as "Cruxification", "Bone Crusher", and "Opposite Sides of Glass", while the vocals of Mitch Barnes have a certain Ozzy/Zakk Wylde feel to them. The grinding "Marching Black" stampedes along with some superhuman might, and the band even throw in a cool cover of Judas Priest's "Deceiver" for good measure. Basically, Blackwater is a completely competent, solid, and enjoyable slab of modern doom. It might no set the world on fire with originality, but it's a platter of heavy riffs that you'll get plenty of mileage out of for sure.
