Super Massive Black Holes: Calculations of the Ancients

I always find it intriguing when bands try to cram many styles into their music; in many cases it doesn't work and sounds like a jumbled mess, but when a group makes it work, the results can often times be quite special. Such is the case with Super Massive Black Holes and their latest release for Minotauro Records, Calculations of the Ancients. The Canadian band have put together songs centered around science themes (almost like an episode of The Big Bang Theory) and enveloped them in musical passages that mix Death Metal, hard rock, Jazz-Fusion, Prog, Blues, ambient, math rock, and well, you name it. Fans of Between the Buried and Me, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and The Unexpect will love the herky-jerky, stop-start zaniness of "Holographic Principle" and "Dyatlov Pass Incident", while the stunning instrumental "Mathematics of Emotion" is a must hear for any guitar aficionado. "Refracted Kaleidoscopic Photons" starts off as a tasty jazz-fusion piece before quickly morphing into a bombastic prog/death metal hybrid, complete with gymnastic drum work and dizzying guitar layers. The band really puts it all together however on the monstrous instrumental "Ghosts of Bhopal", as crushing, complex metal riffs collide with gentle jazz, folk, & blues interludes for a wild ride.

To be honest, there's probably a real niche audience for this kind of 'off the wall' music, but man, you have to give these guys credit for creating such varied material here, as zany as it all may be.

What a story to tell..

I met this group of wit-fitted metallurgist metal-purist, kettle-burnin', pedal-workin', heckle-hurtin', heada-burstin' radicals.. back in the addendum of some year before the end of the world and after the millennium crest of the 21st Centaurus.
It was a fate-full mid-late-evening-middle-dawning-night, that we crossed paths, unknowingly having already been mono-cultures born from the same hospice in Cranbrooklin B.C. Alas, we had less in common then than now, after years of genetic modification. And so it now seems we are bound to surf a synonymous gravitational lensing wave, as is the world around us.. perceived in multiples of the same fractional-bit at different angles..


As for the sound of SMBH's.. I have not, YET, experience the inner core, or sanctum, which rests in a 7/4 time 16th note triploid anywhere from 55bpu(Beats per universe) to an incomprehensibly numerous 'cell-reaction time frame', beyond the Schwarzschild coordinates of the bands width.
How I ever was pulled into this expanding white hole I do not know but I accredit this band for most of my sub-atomic knowledge. For I would not have crossed the river of Acheron and escaped the 'Hell' in which I re-sode, but for the musical botanics ingrained in the SMBH. To speak of the 'definition' pertaining to the harmonic values present in the tantrum phocus of light that manages to escape the dancing fingers of the four over-gods behind the nano-physics of the SMBH, is not ever to be fully understood with but a voicing of the average ratios. It is, that, only a full traverse through the 'point of no return' and through the aforementioned white hole that will attribute you with the knowledge you seek. For what is within is not without.. and what was within..

..is in the (currently only a hypothesized and mythical theory) 'white hole' singularity upon which the tendrils of the magnanimous super-cluster of hemoglobin sub-structures, who call themselves The Super Massive Black Holes, play their virtuous musings to whom ever may be worthy.

P.S. From the 'point of no return', you shall see what you seek, and hear what you freak, but not ever, shall you return, so (far) from a being perched on the latter side of the break-down of our physical universes known frequency shifts, "tread lightly, and tread tough, and know when to do neither, and know when to do reefer."
