Bormann, Michael: Love is Magic

Germany's Michael Bormann is nothing if not highly prolific. He's made countless albums, been in manifold bands and projects including the brilliant Bloodbound record Book of the Dead but he's probably best known for being in Jaded Heart. I'm not entirely sure who came up with the concept of grouping together a ballad collection for Bormann but somebody has and Love is Magic is the result.

Surely a compilation such as this is the kind of effort one might expect from commercial behemoths such as Chicago or Elton John not a rocker such as Bormann? Putting aside that though this is a highly efficient collection Bormann's most syrupy moments including new songs such as "Somebody Like You" and "Überleben" alongside a highly superfluous cover of "Help" by the Beatles. The best tune is the Richard Marx-like "Can't Stop Missing You" but in truth there's just too little change of pace to allow this to be a genuinely coherent album. There's nothing wrong at all with any of the songs but the balladry definitely needs to be leavened out with some faster paced material.
