Conan: Blood Eagle
These are good times for fans of doom metal. Not only do we have a new album from Pilgrim, we also have this powerful album from Conan. Their second release, Blood Eagle comes with extra doses of power and strength. See the cover on this one? It's the perfect companion to the music. This is the stuff of battles. Just check out the opening to "Crown of Talons." The opening riff is as mighty as the band's namesake. But this isn't only battle music—it's also the soundtrack of the aftermath, the solemn surveying of the battlefield right after the enemy is down, the monster defeated. Yes, it's brooding and hypnotic stuff, almost introspective. But it's the music of a world of where men like Conan march and fight, knowing there will always be more monsters to fight.
Aside from the killer riffs, I was particularly enthralled with the vocals on this one. These guys sing together and they do so just under the power of the instruments. The result is a near-primal scream, a cry for understanding. It was also somewhat hypnotic. Indeed, the music here blends doom metal with drone, creating a mysterious, even archaic, overall sound. I loved it.
