For their full-length debut for Candlelight Records, UK sludge act Coltsblood have enlisted Chris Fielding (Winterfylleth, Napalm Death) to produce Into the Unfathomable Abyss, a 7 track journey into the cracks of the netherworld. Style wise, this one is all over the place, from the apocalyptic, doom/drone/sludge of "Beneath Black Skies", to the raging, punk infused noisemaker "Blood", the stoner grooves of "Grievous Molestation ", and the snail's paced funeral death march that is "Abyss Of Aching Insanity". The more sludge laden tracks, like "Ulfeonar" for example, are perhaps a tad too long and ponderous, and with the screaming, tortured vocals stabbing you in the brain, it's not an easy listen at times. "Return To The Lake Of Madness" drops the vocals altogether in favor of some thunderous bass grooves, feedback, yearning guitar explorations, and a creepy, almost post rock vibe. I like where they are going on this one. For the most part though, Into the Unfathomable Abyss is noisy and a bit tedious, but there are some truly heavy moments that should appeal to any sludge fan who is looking for something new to sink their teeth into.
