Neoclassical/power metal act Kenziner recorded two albums in the nineties and that was to be it for the promising group, seemingly all over too soon. Moving forward and Guitarist Jarno Keskinen has returned, recruiting a polished new line-up and the result of this is quite the cracking new metal release The Last Horizon. If you are not familiar with the band from their first time round then The Last Horizon is the ideal chance to chance to experience Kenziner's material.
Kenziner have comeback fifteen years later sounding like they never left this time featuring the excellent vocals of Markku Kuikka (Status Minor, The Ragged Saints), Jukka Karinen (Thunderstone, Status Minor) impresses on the keyboards, drummer Make Lievonen (Embassy of Silence) and bass player Jupi Hjelt are alongside the axe master Jarno Keskinen. Kenziner's past songs made a strong impression on myself so I was keen to hear if they still had it.
Jarno Keskinen is tearing it up all over this release and why not given his excellent guitar work, and it never gets tedious like sometimes happens on this kind of album. To the tracks and "Run For Your Life" is a catchy and melodic opener, Malmsteen fans will delight in the neoclassical shred of such tunes as "Heroes Ride" and "Devour The World". "End Of An Era" is a smashing song where the band really turns it on, "No Turning Back" features explosive guitar and keyboards with some scintillating trade offs all propelled by thunderous rhythm section. Not shying away from complexity once again as the title track "The Last Horizon" starts out with Kenziner performing what could be called neo progressive metal.
If talking recent neo-classical related metal releases compared to the Ring Of Fire's Battle Of Leningrad I'll take what Kenziner's album has to offer, yes The Last Horizon really is that good.
