Clash, The: The Rise and Fall of The Clash (DVD)

This engaging DVD brings the viewer an up close and personal look at the dramatic career of The Clash, one of the true pioneers of the English punk movement of the mid 1970's. Very much a warts and all documentary it really does pull no punches with the bands notorious career that would inevitably lead to them falling out amidst bitter bust-ups and recriminations. Manager Bernie Rhodes comes out of it particularly badly (although he doesn't voice his side of the story) as the film includes interviews with assorted ex-members and their wives interspersed with archive footage and photo montages. The story of The Clash really is a tragic tale of the band unravelling after reaching the heights of playing Shea Stadium and looking set for global success on a scale that the likes of U2 would subsequently go on to enjoy. It is put together in a way that this is not just a film for die-hard fans of the band but will also appeal to those with an interest in the era and the ultimate demise of a band that were yet another casualty of rock and roll excess.
