Inner Road, The: Ascension

The Inner Road is the British duo Jay Parmar (guitars) and Steve Gresswell (keyboards). Both musicians come with a lengthy resume and have been in the business for many years in particular Gresswell who started playing professionally in the early '70s. Parmar replaced Phil Braithwaite who played guitar on their debut album Visions released in 2011.

This is progressive instrumental music played with flair and passion and the musicianship is excellent throughout the eight tracks. Gresswell goes for a variety of sounds on the keys; lush Mellotron, pretty piano motifs, ripping Moog solos, raging Hammond and almost everything else you can think of. At times it sounds like these guys are playing with an orchestra, the orchestral synths in "Two Worlds Two Tomorrows" being a prime example. His work here is outstanding. Parmar does a fantastic job as well. Whether ripping it up in the vein of Satriani for some neo-classical shredding or going for a cleaner Gilmouresque sound he hits all the right notes.

Highlights include the aforementioned "Two Worlds Two Tomorrows", the lovely "The Awakening", with some of Parmar's most melodic soloing and the album ending "Flight Through Eternity" with its cool sitar intro, shifting tempos, soaring guitar solos and '70s inspired Moog work. Just and excellent track.

Ascension is one of most enjoyable instrumental albums I have heard in a while. A classy work of symphonic/orchestral progressive rock that should satisfy progressive rock fans across the board. Who needs vocals when the music is this good?
