Crosby-Stills-Nash & Young: Fifty By Four – Half A Century Of CSNY (DVD)

CSNY were one of the most iconic and influential bands to come out of the '60s. This DVD, a Pride/Chrome Dreams Production, provides a wealth of information of that golden era when the singer-songwriter reigned supreme.

A new era of music was emerging in the US. The singer songwriter style was taking shape in the mid to late '60s and CSNY were arguable one of the most important cogs in that wheel. The video takes us to L.A.'s Laurel Canyon where a proliferation of musicians were following their muse; the likes of Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, The Mamas & the Papas, James Taylor and of course CSN. Lots of archival video footage of the band, including Woodstock is also provided. If you are curious about the breakup of Buffalo Springfield, the developing riff between Young and Stills or an in depth look at the band's classic first album you should enjoy this documentary.

Lots of cool tidbits here like how CSN/CSNY never referred to themselves as a 'band' but rather as three/four singer songwriters bringing their own personas to the music.

Extra features includes an extensive interview with keyboardist Joe Vitale providing insight into the recording of the American Dream album of 1988.

The trials and tribulations of CSNY have been well documented and the informative interviews and colourful insight should appeal to everyone from rock historians to casual fans of the band. It is an interesting story and one every fan of the '60s and '70s music scene needs to see.
