Darkentries are a 5-piece doom/sludge/post rock act from South Carolina, comprised of Jonathan Warf (Guitar), Roger Caughman (Guitar), Bradford Marino (Bass), Hampton Dodd (Vocals), and Josh Gilley (Drums). Their debut for Retro Futurist is titled The Make Believe and it features five tracks of slightly gothic tinged sludge, complete with ravaged vocal wails, booming riffs, crashing rhythms, and plenty of post rock styled atmosphere. "I'm Tired of Being Awake" is pretty haunting stuff, as cascades of riffs collide with clean & growling vocals, the song steeped in brooding atmosphere. "TV Fuzz" is heavy hitting doomy sludge, but with some goth elements, while "1200-S" brings out the super slow, monolithic riffing and inhuman bellows for a huge wall of sound. "Feedback Funeral" is just that, the soundtrack to your next death march, with massive walls of feedback, guitar & bass riffs, plodding rhythms, and screaming vocals. The Make Believe ain't pretty by any means, but there are some intriguing things going on here that are definitely worth a listen or two.
