Riotgod: Driven Rise

Riotgod is a New Jersey rock band known for their hardworking ethos and their dedication to making hard rock in an age of genres and subgenres. Driven Rise, their third album, is a straightforward hard rock album that, to me, sounded a lot like a cross between metal and rock crossed with a little bit of grunge. To put it another way, they play rock without very much swagger. Sure, they've got riffs, dynamic vocals, and a good back end, but they don't look back far enough. They want their sound to be current, the sound of rock in the now, but the result sounds like an album from the 90s. If they went back further—to the 70s, let's say—they'd have more groove, more swagger, more panache.

I did like a couple of tracks: "Sidewinder" was one. So was "Positronic." By the end, though, things just started to sound flat and familiar.
