In 2012, Rise Above Records released the debut full-length from UK heavy rock act Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, Don't Hear it...Fear it!, which was a big hit with fans & critics alike, not surprisingly also striking a chord with us here at Sea of Tranquility as well. Well, they are back with their follow-up, titled Check 'em Before You Wreck 'em, and it's another collection of heavy hitting biker rock/metal for all fans of Sir Lord Baltimore, Black Sabbath, Budgie, Dust, Motorhead, Buffalo, MC5, and, well, you get the picture.
Johnny Gorilla (guitar, vocals) , Bill Darlington (drums), and Louis Comfort-Wiggett (bass) pound out ten songs here on this latest platter of proto-metal certain to take you back to 1972 all over again. From the raunchy & infectious "Do It Now", the doom laden and quite psychedelic "Captain Merryweather", to the crushing Budgie-meets-Black Sabbath-by way of Steppenwolf stomp that is "Running From Home". Elsewhere, there's the bluesy biker metal piece "Happiness Begins", the riff-tastic "Don't Hear it...Fear it!", the Cactus inspired boogie metal of "Bulletproof", and the lengthy "Late Night Mornings", a nightmarish psych/garage rock freakout that recalls the early Stooges at their best, complete with boozy vocals and slashing lead guitar work.
Check 'em Before You Wreck 'em is a hell of a lot of fun, a heavy rocking affair from a band that's not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve and have a blast with it. Pick up a copy, bang thy head, crack open a cold one, spark up what you got, and get that air guitar goin'!
