Hopeless Youth: Disgust

I haven't spend a lot of time in Montreal's extreme music scene but I have a few connections here and there that tell me things are strong and getting stronger. For those readers closer to the goings-on in Quebec, Hopeless Youth may be a more familiar name than they are to me. I don't know how long they've been going at it, other than that this is their first full-length, a follow-up to a 2012 EP.

The music on this album is straightforward hardcore music played with just the right balance of DIY spirit, attitude, and aggression. To me, the best tracks were those (like "Ghost") that get into the perfect headbanging groove some of the time. Other strong tracks were the angry—even unnerving—"We Were Told" and "Divided United." My favorite track, though, was "Burnt Offering." It's opening had the aforementioned groove, one that quickly explodes into a despairing and aggressive charge.

Fans of strong contemporary hardcore should find this album very satisfying.
