Osta Love: Good Morning Dystopia

Osta Love is a German progressive rock band from Berlin. In the band are Tobias Geberth (guitars, bass, vocals, keyboards, string arrangements) and Leon Ackermann (drums and percussion). Good Morning Dystopia clicked with me right from the start. It is not the most original sounding album, the Pink Floyd references are numerous, but the playing is so inspired and the production so professional I could not help but being swept away. What is even more impressive is this is the band's first album.

The music is quite moody and atmospheric in places which makes perfect sense given the album's slightly pessimistic title. Many of the tracks are injected with quieter mood laden sections that offer a sorrowful vibe at times but never does the music sound 'depressing'. "Prologue" begins with moody sound effects and faint talking before the heavier riffs start. The vocals are very laid back and have a definite Gilmour influence. The tempo slows down allowing for some plaintive piano to take hold. I love the mixture of crunchy guitar riffs and more atmospheric textures. It should also be stated that nowhere does the band venture into hard rock or metal territory. More Gilmour inspired guitar can be heard in "Fragile Freedom" but it also gives off a Porcupine Tree vibe. "Alienation" starts with sweet acoustic arpeggios before broodier riffs enter the picture again reminding me of Porcupine Tree. I enjoyed all the songs here but none more so than the excellent "The Guards", nine minutes of Pink Floyd atmospherics and a wonderful repeating Animals-era guitar riff. The riffs build in intensity before releasing into a quieter moment of pretty piano and lush synth textures.

If you are a fan of Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree Good Morning Dystopia is a no-brainer. There have been many fine progressive rock bands coming out of Germany and you can add Osta Love to the list. Another great find for Progressive Promotion Records.
